One of the first community art projects I worked on was A Path to the River/Un camino al río, a bilingual children’s book about the history of Barrio Anita neighborhood and its historical connection to the Santa Cruz River. For two years, I facilitated evening session with students from Davis Bilingual Magnet School and Barrio Anita Neighbors in writing about neighborhood history based on interviews conducted with elders and neighborhood walks and research. Compiling participants’ stories, interviews, drawings and other elements, I edited and designed the book, which was published in 2000. The project was sponsored by the City of Tucson Water Resources Department and PRONeighborhoods.
